This image from NE Ropes shows where to mark the line for splicing. From the bitter end to mark A should be two and a half "fid lengths" with a standard "fid length" being 21 times the diameter of the rope. In this case distance A is around 10 inches (9.84375" for those doing the math.)
The distance from A to B is the length of our eye loop - about 1" less than the length of my sleeve when stretched tight over the line. Mark C is about 2 1/2" from B. The distance from C to D should be a little longer than the distance from the bitter end to A so that the end can be burried.
